Two caught red handed while conducting sex determination test at clinic in Yamunanagar

Chandigarh, July 8, 2015: In a joint operation launched by district administration Saharanpur in Uttar Pradesh and Yamunanagar in Haryana, a doctor and a middleman have been caught red handed while conducting a sex determination test at a clinic in Yamunanagar today.

While stating this today, a spokesman of district administration, Yamunanagar said that the team also seized an unauthorised portable ultrasound machine, a laptop and other equipments.

Giving details of the incident, the spokesman said that a doctor namely Shakeel Ahmed used to conduct sex determination tests at an ultrasound centre in Saharanpur at Sahara Diagnostic Centre and Amit Kumar of Chandigarh Clinic at Sarsawa used to bring patients to the said doctor for sex determination tests.

He said that the Deputy Commissioner, Dr S. S. Phuliya had been getting complaints against Amit Kumar for getting sex determination tests conducted. He said that with a view to verify the complaints, Dr Phuliya constituted a team including Tehsildar Jagadhri Mr Darshan Kumar who was made Duty Magistrate. The other members of the team included Medical Superintendent of General Hospital, Yamunanagar and nodal officer of Pre Natal Diagnostic Techniques (PNDT) Act, Dr Vijay Dahiya, Child Welfare Officer, Ms Manisha Khanna and Deputy Superintendent of Police, Mr Joginder Sharma.

He said that the team sent a decoy patient to Chandigarh Clinic in Sarsawa where Amit Kumar asked for Rs 10,000 to conduct sex determination test and abort the foetus. It was finally decided that the patient would have to pay only Rs 8000. Amit Kumar accompanied the patient in a vehicle to Sahara Diagnostic Centre in Yamunanagar. The teams of Yamunanagar and Saharanpur kept following the information given by the decoy patient. As the cell phone of the patient was on, the teams heard the conversation going on between Amit Kumar, Dr Shakeel and the patient and recorded it. As soon as Dr Shakeel Ahmed received Rs 8000 through Amit Kumar and started the process of test, both the teams reached the spot and arrested them red handed.

He said that a First Information Report was lodged at police station, Qutubsher in Saharanpur under PNDT Act. He said that the Deputy Commissioner, Yamunanagar appreciated the support of district administration, Saharanpur. He said that Indian Medical Association was also helping the district administration, Yamunanagar in checking the menace of female foeticide. The district administration, Yamunanagar is keeping a vigil on ultrasound centres in adjacent areas and those found indulged in such illegal practices would invite stern action against themselves. / (SK Vyas, Jalandhar)
