Jalandhar, June 21, 2015: Vajra Corps exhibited its physical versatility, as part of nationwide effort to celebrate the International Yoga day for the first time on21 June 2015 at Jalandhar Cantt. A strength of 7700 persons, comprising Officers, JCOs, Jawans and their families, as well as children of Army School and Kendriya Vidyala, from Jalandhar Cantonment voluntarily practiced Yoga ‘asanas’ (postures) and ‘pranayam’ together in symphony in Katoch Stadium. Vajra Corps earlier undertook a special drive to train a core group of 70 Yoga instructors for two weeks, to further train the soldiers and their families of entire Jalandhar Cantonment.
The objective of the Yoga session organized by Vajra Corps was to provide an insight into the traditional basis of Yoga and its relevance in the present day context of high stress and demanding military service. Yoga, emphasises flexibility of mind and body, thereby enhancing the mental agility, physical stamina and steadfastness of soldiers. Yoga, therefore, fits perfectly with the military's emphasis on mental robustness and physical agility, to hone the overall personality of Indian Army soldiers. Yoga uses meditation, deep relaxation, gentle stretching and breathing exercises to reduce physical, emotional and mental tension and stress levels of a soldier and therefore is useful in helping people to deal with anxiety caused by traumatic events faced by the soldiers in combat.
The special historic Yoga Shivir, organized by Vajra Corps for Jalandhar Cantonment was attended by Lt Gen NPS Hira, General Officer Commanding Vajra Corps, Maj Gen Deepak Dhanda, Chief of Staff Vajra Corps, Maj Gen Harminder Singh, General Officer Commanding Sub Area and other senior dignitaries. The 35 minutes session included a set of loosening exercises followed by Yogasana and Pranayam under the guidance of specialist Yoga Instructors Major Sada Shiv and Mrs Ashumeet Lehl. The spectacular event ended with the complete gathering of 7,700 persons taking a solemn pledge “To evolve into healthy, peaceful, joyful and loving human beings”.
