Chandigarh, May 27, 2015: As water table is falling considerably in Kurukshetra district, farmers have been advised not to sow paddy before June 15 and those found violating the instructions would be fined Rs 10,000. Also, Central Ground Water Authority (CGWA) has declared Shahbad, Pehowa and Ladwa blocks of Kurukshetra as notified areas where nobody would be allowed to install tubewell without prior permission. Action would be taken against those who would violate these instructions.
While stating this today, an official spokesman said that all the six blocks of district Kurukshetra have been included in the category of dark zone as according to the report of Agriculture Department, the average level of water table in all these blocks has fallen by 10 meters during the last ten years. He said that the people have been asked to keep a check on unnecessary wastage of water.
The spokesman said that the ground water level in Babain, Ladwa, Pehowa, Shahbad, Ismailabad and Thanesar blocks in district Kurukshetra has been fallen by 10 meters during the last ten years which is a matter of concern. While throwing light on the figures of last ten years, he said that the ground water level of district Kurukshetra in the year 2004 was at 23.06 meters whereas it was at 24.47 meters in 2005, 26.35 meters in 2006, 27.78 meters in 2007, 28.79 meters in 2008, 29.66 meters in 2009, 29.83 meters in 2010, 28.91 meters in 2011, 31.49 meters in 2012, 33.24 meters in 2013 and in the year 2014, the water level of district Kurukshetra had reached 33.74 meters. He said that the average ground water level of Babain block has fallen to 9.9 meters. Similarly, in the last ten years, the ground water level of Ladwa block fallen to 8.17 meter, in Pehowa 11.14 meters, in Shahbad 12 meters, in Ismailabad 12 meters and Thanesar 11 meters. / (SK Vyas, Jalandhar)
