It may be mentioned here that Dr SaumitraRawat is highly respected and distinguished Surgeon of national and international repute. He is surgical trainer par excellence and important thought leader in Medicine. He is Chairman and Head, Department of Surgical Gastroenterology and Liver Transplant at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, New Delhi and Member, Court of Examiner of Royal College of Surgeons of England,
Born on 23rd September 1965,Dr.Rawatobtained MBBS and MS (Surgery) from prestigious Maulana Azad Medical College, New Delhi. In 1995, he went to England for advanced super specialist training, where he was extensively trained in world-class centres at Sheffield, Newcastle and Leeds. He has impressive list of fellowships, which includes FRCS (Glasgow), FRCS (Edinburgh), FRCS (England) and FRCS (Intercollegiate).He was consultant and honorary consultant surgeon at Glasgow Royal Infirmary, East Cheshire NHS Trust and Christie’s Hospital respectively. These are internationally recognized Centre’s of Excellence. Dr.Rawat has a passion for teaching. He is a trainer in laparoscopic surgery for Royal College of Surgeon of England and has trained surgeons from around the world. He was Surgical Tutor of Royal College of Surgeons of England. He has been faculty and convenor for various Skill Courses of Royal College of Surgeons of England. He was Undergraduate trainer for University of Leeds, Glasgow and Manchester and Postgraduate trainer for Glasgow and Liverpool.
After a very long and distinguished 17 years career in UK, Dr.Rawat returned to India in 2012.Dr. Rawat is Chairman and Head, Department of Surgical Gastroenterology & Liver Transplant Department at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital. His department is one of the largest and among the best in the country and major one internationally. He is pioneer in bringing up laparoscopic and robotic surgery for GI cancer in Sir Ganga Ram hospital. He and his team have performed the first robotic hepatico-jejunostomy in India and first low anterior resection in North India and among the first to perform robotic and laparoscopic Oesophagectomy with excellent results. He also developed Enhanced recovery programme for cancer Surgery.
Dr.Rawat is an important contributor to Oxford Handbook of Clinical Surgery (a best-selling surgical book in the world) and the Oxford Handbook of Operative Surgery. Dr. Rawat has held honorary positions in various professional bodies including Honorary Editor for the Indian edition of “Diseases of the Colon and Rectum”. This is the official Journal of American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons and is world's leading publication.
There is a very strong philanthropic side and public service to his towering personality. He was President of Junior Doctor Association at Maulana Azad Medical College and was President of Rotaract Club in Delhi, Connaught Place, where he contributed to institutionalised voluntary service for socially and economically disadvantaged sections of society. He is supporting the basic education of underprivileged children and has helped many meritorious children to pursue higher education and their dreams.
He was awarded Ed Eundum Fellowship of Royal College of Surgeons of England. He has received the Academic excellence award by Delhi Medical Association and was felicitated for delivering a keynote lecture by Indian Medical Association. Patna Medical College honoured him in their 88thannual college day with oration award. Laxmibai National University of physical Education invited him as chief guest and honoured him with oration award. Given his work as one of the important leader in Medicine, he was invited to participate in Young Leaders Conclave-Vision 2020.
