Jalandhar, January 16, 2015: Army Day is celebrated on 15 January every year in recognition of Field Marshal KM Cariappa’s taking over as the first Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army from Sir Francis Butcher, the last commander, in 1948. On the eve of the Army Day 2015, six battalions of The Sikh Regiment have been awarded with Chief of Army Staff Unit Citation and Army Commander’s Unit Appreciation. Chief of Army Staff Unit Citation and Army Commander’s Unit Appreciation is an official recognition of outstanding and meritorious contribution made by a unit for three categories of superior performance viz outstanding achievements in face of enemy/ Counter Insurgency/ Counter Terrorist Operations, outstanding achievement in aid to civil authorities and sustained outstanding performance over a period of one year.
The Chief of Army Staff gave away the coveted COAS Unit Citation to 6 Rashtriya Rifles for outstanding achievement of Counter Insurgency/ Counter Terrorist Operations. Five more battalions have been awarded Army Commander’s Unit Citation viz 4 SIKH, 10 SIKH, 14 SIKH, 157 Infantry Battalion (TA) SIKH) and The Sikh Regimental Centre, in recognition of sustained outstanding performance over the period of last one year.
Congratulating the award winning units, Lt Gen GS Shergill, the Colonel of The Sikh Regiment said that it was an apt recognition of sustained and incessant perseverance and dedication by the units. The Sikh Regiment has won six COAS/Army Commanders Unit Citations which is highest ever by any Regiment in a single year. It assures everyone that units of the Regiment are in safe hands and will continue to perform in times to come.
