Jalandhar, November 11, 2014: Army conducted a Disaster Management Exercise ‘Mountain Rescue’ in aid to civil authorities at the Annadale Ground Shimla on 10-11 Nov 2014.
Major natural calamities that have struck the Indian Sub Continent during the last decade have underscored the need to adopt a multi-dimensional, multi disciplinary & multi sectoral approach to disaster management.  The recent natural disasters of Uttarakhand and J&K are a glaring examples signifying the magnitude of crisis.  Within the ambit of the subject the armed forces constitute a significant entity for disaster response & relief.  By virtue of their organizational strength, motivation, discipline & operational preparedness; they have always risen to the occasion, earning the appreciation of the environment for their, singular contribution towards disaster management and provisioning of timely rescue and relief in adverse circumstances.
The aim of the exercise was to practice evacuation of civilian population from the disaster affected areas in the remote mountains of Himachal Pradesh.  Army Avaition Corps helicopters practiced casualty evacuation drills along with the Army Special Forces & regular troops of Jutogh Battalion.  The exercise was conducted in conjuction with civil administration, fire service department & NDMA personnel.
The intrinsic organizational strength of the Army was in full display.  More such exercises are planned in the future to fine tune disaster response drills.
