Chandigarh, October 30, 2014: Congress Deputy Leader in the Lok Sabha and president of the All India Jat Maha Sabha, Capt Amarinder Singh today blamed the Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal for the denial of benefits under OBC reservation to the poor Jats of Punjab.
Addressing a state level convention organised to appoint the state and district level office bearers of the Sabha in Punjab,Capt Amarinder expressed surprise as why Mr Badal was dilly-dallying on the issue.
“Let me clarify that the reservation is only for the poor Jats and not the rich ones like me or Badal”, he said, adding, the children of poor Jats from Punjab could have got admission in various educational institutions of the government under OBC category, besides jobs in central government including IAS and IPS, had Badal implemented the Jat reservation decision in Punjab.
Justifying the demand for the reservation of poor Jats under OBC, as has happened in all other states with Jat population, the Congress leader pointed out, the land holdings in Punjab, particularly in the southern part were shrinking and poor and destitute farmers were committing suicide. “The reservation is for the people like those and it is sad the same was being denied to them”, he said.
Speaking on the occasion, the state president of the Sabha Kushaldeep Singh ‘Kikki’ Dhillon said that the Sabha will organise units at the district and the block level and built up a movement to ensure that the Jats got reservation under OBC category like those in Haryana and Rajasthan.
Among those who addressed the function included Yudhvir Singh, the Secretary General of the Sabha and Harpal Singh, the vice president.
On the occasion Capt Amarinder presented letters of appointment to general secretaries, secretaries and the district presidents who had come from across the state.
Senior Congress leaders Jagmohan Singh Kang, Charanjit Singh Channi, Amrik Singh Dhillon, Milkiat Singh Dakha, Pawan Dewan and others were also present on the occasion.
