Ludhiana, October 6, 2014: Police have claimed to have busted two gangs of bookies alleged involving into betting on cricket matches, said the Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Crime, Ludhiana Jaswinder Singh here today.
Addressing the media persons here today, he added the accused had allegedly accepted bets on T-20 cricket match played between Australia and Pakistan on Sunday. He told that a total seven accused had been arrested identified as Amit Malhotra of Janakpuri, Jatinder Singh of Khurana Colony, Bhamian road, Sanjay Kumar of Daresi Road, Vaibhav Verma of Joshi Nagar (Haibowal Kalan), Amit Kumar of New Madhopuri, Rajesh Chopra of Guru Nanak Dev Nagar (Haibowal) and Beeru Kumar of Prem Nagar.
These accused were arrested during two separate raids conducted by CIA Staff-I, one at a house on Chandigarh road and another in a house in the Inderpuri Area on Sunday. The two accused identified as Aashu Katyal of Indrapuri and Tona of Indrapuri have managed to flee.
The recoveries from the arrested accused included 1 mini exchange, 39 mobile phones, 2 recorders, 2 laptop, 1 data card, tv set and cash worth Rs.1.30 lakh.
Police Division No.7 have registered two separate cases under sections 420, 467, 468, 471 of the IPC and sections 13A, 13, 67 of the Gambling Act against the accused.
In the preliminary investigation, police have learnt that the accused had procured mobile connections on fictitious identities, said the ACP, adding further police investigation was on.
