CBI arrests absconding accused in case relating to alleged violation in import of luxury vehicles

New Delhi/Jalandhar, February 4, 2014: The Central Bureau of Investigation has arrested an absconding accused (Private person) at Delhi in a case relating to alleged violation in import of luxury vehicles (Cars).
The accused was produced before the Special Judge, CBI Cases, Chennai after transit warrant and remanded to Policy Custody up to February this year.
A case was registered on March 20 last year by CBI against officials of Directorate of Revenue Intelligence;  a private person and unknown others U/s 120-B, 420, 467, 468, 468 r/w 471 IPC & Sec. 13(2) r/w 13(1)(d) of Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988 on the allegation that the private person had imported luxury vehicles (Cars) through Indian Sea Ports violating pre & post import provisions and in this process, cheated & caused loss to the tune of Rs.48.40 crores (approx) to the Govt.of India in the matter of import duty.
It was further alleged that the private person was engaged in the business of import of high value foreign cars from abroad for the last several years and selling it in the local market. Import of these cars were permitted only on Transfer of Residence (TR) Rules under the Customs Act, 1962.
The alleged mod-us operandi followed was that he used to get  orders from the Indian buyers and would place the orders for the required car at the foreign country with the used car dealers.  Thereafter, he would hire the assistance of Indian Nationals of working class category being repatriated to India on cancellation of work permits. These cars were thereafter consigned to India through Chennai, Mumbai, Cochin Sea Ports and New Delhi Airport in the names of these repatriated workers.
The private person was evading due process of law, right from the date of registration of the said case and was not responding to the notices for appearance, issued by CBI. The High Court of Madras had also turned down his repeated prayers for grant of anticipatory bail and he continued to evade CBI investigation and was absconding.  CBI had also issued “Look Out Circular” to all Airports to apprehend him. CBI, after sustained efforts, located him at Hotel in New Delhi and was arrested in the night of February 1 this year. On February 2 this year, the arrested accused was produced before the Court at New Delhi who issued a Transit Warrant for producing him before the Principal Special Judge for CBI Cases, Chennai.
