Dharamsala, January 27, 2014: Seventy-one-year-old Senior Congress leader Viplove Thakur is all set to be re-elected in the biennial election to Rajya Sabha from Himachal Pradesh Thakur, whose nomination was cleared by the party yesterday. She will file her nomination papers tomorrow for the seat falling vacant on expiry of BJP member Shanta Kumar's term.
Viplove, daughter of veteran politicians Comrade late Paras Ram and Congress stalwart late Sarla Sharma, was born at Dharamshala in District Kangra on October 4, 1943. She was married to late Thakur Harnam Singh on June 19 June, 1961.
Viplove was MLA in Himachal (1985-90, 1993-98 and 1998-2003). She was Minister of State (Independent Charge), Indian System of Medicines from 1995-98 in Himachal. She was elected to Rajya Sabha in June 2006 and remained Member, Committee on Science and Technology, Environment and Forests between August 2006 and July 2008.
She remained President, Himachal Pradesh Congress Committee from August 2006 to May 2009
Her victory is almost certain as Congress has 36 MLAs in the 68-member Assembly and five Independents and a lone member of Himachal Lokhit Party (HLP) support the ruling party.
Thakur is the first woman from Himachal Pradesh to be nominated for the Upper House for the second term. She represented the state in Rajya Sabha from Himachal from 2006 to 2012.
