Jalandhar, December 31, 2012: The Special Judge for CBI Cases, Mumbai has convicted Rajiv Kumar, then Assistant Commissioner of Income Tax, Mumbai and sentenced him to undergo five years Rigorous Imprisonment with fine of Rs.30,000 in a bribery case.
A case was registered against the Assistant Commissioner of Income Tax, Mumbai on a complaint. The Complainant had alleged that the accused demanded a bribe of Rs. 1 lakh to avoid complications in his income tax matters. Later on, accused enhanced his demand of bribe from Rs. 1 lakh to Rs. 4 lakh.
CBI laid a trap and the accused was caught red handed while demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs.25,000 as a part amount.
After completion of the investigation, a charge sheet was filed during 2000 before the Special Court, Mumbai. During the course of trial, accused filed number of Criminal Revision Applications before the Bombay High Court on one or other grounds and reasons. Finally, prosecution succeeded in securing conviction of the accused.
