New Delhi, December 16, 2013: Kapil Sibal, Minister for Communications and Information Technology, here today released ‘Updated and advanced Urdu Language Software Tools CD, Bharat Operating System Solutions (BOSS 5.0) CD and Urdu children stories for Android based Aakash Tablet’ for public use. These are now also available for free download from http://tdil-dc.in. These have been developed by CDAC under the mentoring of TDIL Programme of Department of Electronics and Information Technology (DeitY), Govt. of India. The previously released Urdu language software tools CD did also have tools supporting legacy applications. However, with the advent of universal standards, such as Unicode and the version changes in the free and open source software’s necessitated the updation.
The updated and advanced ‘Urdu Software Tools CD’ is a set of standards compliant free software tools, that enables Windows and Linux users to carry out various task on computers in Urdu Language. The software applications are organized under three categories namely desktop usage , internet usage, and other useful software utilities.
The “Bharat Operating System Solutions CD (BOSS 5.0)” is a GNU / Linux developed by C-DAC under the guidance of Free and Open Source Software’s (FOSS) group of DeitY, Govt. of India is having Urdu language interface. This localized Operating System and tools will benefit the usage of Free / Open Source Software in India. This new release of BOSS 5.0, namely “ANOKHA” comes with many new applications focused on enhanced security and user friendliness. The release also includes the software updates for various packages including Apache Server, BIND DNS Server, GNU Compiler collection, GIMP, MySQL, Open SSH, php, python, etc.
Children stories for Android based Aakash Tablet is a collection of 21 educational literature books from National Council for Promotion of Urdu Language (NCPUL). C-DAC is working with NCPUL for the same.
C-DAC is carrying out pioneering Research and Development in the area of language technologies and has several products / tools / technologies to its credit, which is powering various projects of National importance.
The National Council for Promotion of Urdu Language (NCPUL) is an autonomous body under the Ministry of Human Resource Development (HRD), Department of Higher Education, Government of India and is actively involved in production of literature in the Urdu language, including books on science and other branches of modern knowledge, children's literature textbooks, reference works, encyclopedia, dictionaries, etc.
TDIL Programme & FOSS group of DeitY and C-DAC will be further working with NCPUL under the overall guidance of DeitY for bringing out various standards, tools and technologies for Urdu language.
