Gurgaon, July 18, 2015: Mr.T.L Satyaprakash, Deputy Commissioner, Gurgaon inaugurated DLF Foundation’s Solid Waste Management and composting unit at DLF phase 1 today. Present on the occasion were Mr.Ritesh Sinha, Director, DLF Foundation, Mr.Rohit Malik, Director, DLF Estate Developers Ltd, Ms.Nisha Singh, Councilor Gurgaon,Mr.Sudhir Kapoor, General Secretary, DLF City RWA along with the members of RWA and the residents. This is a community level initiative for waste management by promoting source segregation and composting of horticulture and household food wastes.
This unit is set up by DLF Foundation under their Swachh Bharat Abhiyan. The waste management unit is set up in H block (champa marg) and will be managed by RWAs (HBRC,GBRC ,PCDG) with the support of DLF Foundation, DLF City RWA and DEDL. This unit is set up to treat the organic wastes that will come from the residents. Technology used in this facility for waste processing doesn’t cause any bad odor or unsanitary condition which is the normal fear for such a facility operated inside the residential area. More than 600kg of waste goes to landfill sites and chokes the drains. This will process early 600 kg of horticulture and food waste daily. Compost produced from garden and food waste is rich in soil nutrients and good for organic farming. The compost will be collected and distributed to the local farmers. Local farmers have been identified at Sohna Road who will be given the manure that will be produced at this unit. Progressively, the residents will also carry out segregation of e waste and hazardous wastes.
“This initiative is a very good example of waste management, we need such models to replicate and this is the right time to start it. MCG and HUDA will work together to replicate this model in entire Gurgaon.  We will support and contribute 50 lakh from our end and propose the same to HUDA and will set up 10 such units in the first leg.” said Mr. T. L Satyaprakash, Deputy Commissioner, Gurgaon.
Mr. Ritesh Sinha, Director, DLF Foundation said, “The objective of this activity is to sensitize residents about best practices of solid waste management and also help to improve the work of rag pickers. This is also to demonstrate that almost 70% of waste generated can be recycled into organic manure and not sent to landfill. We can utilize this manure in our locality and houses. Our objective is to promote decentralization of waste management”.
“It is part of a process of social change that an initiative of this kind can prevent dumping and burning of waste”, said Sudhir Kapoor of DLF City RWA.
