Turns Around Life After Bariatric Surgery
Patiala, May 13, 2015: For 26-year-old Rohin Bansal, a resident of Patiala, life has taken a complete U-turn in the last two years. In December 2013, Rohin was morbidly obese at 180 Kg. After searching on the internet about bariatric surgery, this young entrepreneur met Bariatric & GI Tract Surgeon, Fortis Hospital Mohali Dr RP Doley who advised him to undergo laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy. Deciding quickly Rohin immediately decided to undergo bariatric surgery. Today, he is close to 100 Kg lighter.
Sharing his post-surgery experience and life with media persons here today Rohin said, “Dr Doley completely transitioned my life with this safe way of losing weight. I knew about bariatric surgery, but could not find proper guidance. Dr Doley not only explained the surgery in detail, albeit also that ensured I follow a strict and healthy lifestyle after the procedure.”
Speaking of the advent of latest technology in bariatric surgery, Dr RP Doley said that many patients like Rohin have been benefitted immensely from it. An advanced laparoscopic, metabolic and bariatric surgeon, Dr Doley said, “Obesity has doubled worldwide since 1980 and close to 40% world’s adult population were obese in 2014. Though obesity is preventable, many fail to fight it. Punjab has one of the highest burdens of obesity in the country, due to fat-rich diet and sedentary lifestyle.”
Listing the major risk factors associated with obesity, Dr Doley said these include diabetes, heart disease, sleep apnea, acid reflux, hypertension and even cancer. “People with a BMI (Body Mass Index) of over 30 are obese. Weight-loss management includes medical therapy, behavior & lifestyle medication, and finally, bariatric surgery,” he added.
Like Rohin, Patiala resident Mr Narinder Pal Verma, 47, also underwent surgery after his weight touched 152 Kg. “I weigh 105 Kg now and my diabetes is also under control due to the surgery. Besides controlling a dangerous disease like diabetes, my surgery has also brought me a lot of peace of mind and happiness to perform my day to day jobs with ease,” he said.
Another Patiala resident, Navdeep, underwent the surgery in January 2014. “I have come down from 171 Kg to 91 Kg,” he shared happily. “My knees had developed severe pain and I had gone to the Orthopaedics surgeon for a solution. However, he explained that unless I lost weight, no treatment for knees would prove effective in the long term. I met Dr Doley and under his guidance, I decided to undergo bariatric surgery. I had Sleep Apnea, which got miraculously resolved and now I sleep better than anybody at home,” he said.
For people who are severely and morbidly obese (BMI over 35), bariatric surgery today is not only the treatment of choice but also the only long-term effective therapy in the management of morbid obesity, said Dr Doley. “However, all our patients are asked to stay on follow-up for diet and we motivate them to include some form of physical exercise in their lives. For instance, I know that Rohin not only runs every day, but also goes to the gym. The surgery is only successful if the patients are committed to changing their lives,” the surgeon said.
“At our centre for diabetic and metabolic surgery, patients have hugely benefitted from the world-class treatment available here. Due to the minimally-invasive surgery and skilled surgeons & team, our patients are able to walk on the same day as the surgery and are not required to stay for more than three days at the hospital,” said Abhijit Singh, Facility Director, Fortis Hospital Mohali.
The indications of Bariatric Surgery include 32.5 BMI or greater with co-morbidities, 37.5 BMI or greater even without any co-morbidities, age is between 18 and 65, failed attempts at weight loss for at least six months, no psychological contraindications, understanding surgery/risks and compliance with post-surgery diet and exercise requirements. The kinds of bariatric surgery performed at Fortis Hospital Mohali include Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy, Laparoscopic Greater Curvature Plication, Mini Gastric Bypass and Laparoscopic roux-en-y gastric bypass, among others.
