Chandigarh, May 3, 2015: A team from Haryana, comprising 15 members, reached Pokhara Airport in Nepal today and delivered the first consignment of relief material, including 70,000 blankets, 3,500 tents or tarpaulin, essential medicines, carpets and mattresses etc. This is by far the largest contribution made by any state so far, and Haryana ranks among the first to reach Nepal with relief.
Stating this here today, an official spokesman said that the Haryana team, carrying relief material for Nepal under ‘Operation Maitri’, led by Vinay Partap Singh, ADC Gurgaon, and Dhirendra Kumar, SDM, Ellenabad, reached Gorakhpur on the night of May 1 after travelling 800 kms. The team visited the relief camp set up at Gorakhpur University to access relief operations being carried by the Indian Armed Forces and the Central Government.
With the help of local administration and the Indian Army, the team delivered a part of the relief material at Pokhara Airport, and then proceeded to deliver the rest of the consignment at Palumtang advanced landing ground from where it would be taken to remote villages by helicopters of the Indian Army.
In the first phase, 21 trucks carrying materials have reached Nepal. Vinay Partap Singh said the quake victims were badly in need of tents and blankets as people had lost their houses. Haryana has reached Nepal with aid at the right time and would help in providing shelter to the victims in Nepal, the spokesman added. / (SK Vyas, Jalandhar)
