Jalandhar, March 19, 2015: Lt Gen GS Shergill, Colonel of the Sikh Regiment visited his Battalions deployed in difficult areas of Jammu & Kashmir in Jammu, Samba, Rajouri, Surankot and Poonch and reviewed the security situation and the performance of the SIKH REGIMENT during his three day visit from 16 to 18 Mar 2015.
It may be recalled that a record number of SIKH REGIMENT Battalions have received Unit Citations for exceptional performance on the occasion of ARMY DAY this year. The General Officer addressed troops at each of the locations, interacted with them and reminded them to perform with matching zeal in tune with vast legacy of traditional valour of the Sikh Regiment and the Indian Army.
Lt Gen GS Shergill, a third generation officer and himself a seasoned soldier has served in these difficult areas of J&K in Counter Terrorism operations in various capacities for almost 18 years. He reminded the troops of the importance of role played by the Sikh Regiment in Counter Insurgency and Counter Terrorism and congratulated them for their immense contribution in guarding the borders and keeping the State incident free during recent elections and for their dedication to duty during the recent floods. He also visited the senior officers in the region to review the role being played by the Battalions of the Regiment.
A number of trophies were instituted on this occasion to mark the event and remind the soldiers to carry out their duties in an exemplary manner. He presented these trophies to the Commanding Officers of the various Sikh Battalions. Serving and retired officers of the Regiment settled in the region also met him and discussed issues related to the Regiment. The visiting General also met the Ex Servicemen and War Widows of the Regiment and assured them of continued support from the Regiment.
