Chandigarh, January 10, 2015: Chandigarh MP Kirron Kher was today awarded the Maitreyi Puraskar in Pune. Instituted by the Bharatiya Chhatra Sansad, the award has been given to Kher for her contribution to Women Empowerment and Parliamentary Practices.
Speaking to youngsters at the student Parliament, Kher relived her journey from the world of Bollywood to the world of Politics. "When nobody walked with me, I decided to walk alone for the causes that I believed in. Slowly, people joined in and support started building. Today, life has turned 360 degrees," said Kher.
"I now live in Delhi and Chandigarh, and no longer with my family in Mumbai. Living alone is difficult because you don't have the everyday presence of your loved ones as you take some important decisions in life. It can be a lonely space - but I don't feel like I'm alone because I have the support of the people," Kher said.
The award was presented to the MP by Union Minister of Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari. After receiving the award, Kher encouraged students to contribute positively towards the development of the country, in order to bring in good, clean, transparent governance at all levels.
