Dharamsala, December 20, 2014: On Saturday, Himachal State Health Secretary Vineet Chawdhry has set up an inquiry commission under Dr SK Sharma, to conduct speedy probe into the incident in which some patients have reportedly lost eyesight after the operation, in an eye surgery camp in Kangra district.
“Inquiry officer has been asked to submit the report within a week,” a government official said here.
The Himachal Pradesh government on Saturday ordered a probe after some patients, who had undergone cataract surgery at a free eye camp, lodged a complaint that they lost eyesight after the operation, officials said.
At least five patients have reported to be lost their eyesight after operation at a free eye surgery camp in Himachal Pradesh, said an   official.
Official said the operation took place in Pathankot town of neighbouring state of Punjab at a private hospital. Nearly 60 people underwent cataract surgeries at the camp. The mishandled surgeries at the eye camp were discovered when patients came to a government office asking for medicine and financial help.   All the patients belonged to Kangra District of Himachal Pradesh.
Dr.Sharma said only five cases have come to light so far."There is no denying they have lost their eyesight. So far, I have interacted with five patients. I have talked to only five people because I had received affidavit from the five people only," said Dr. Sharma.
Dr. Sharma added that the operation took place at a private hospital in Pathankot town.
"There was no problem during the screening camp and this is the subject of the inquiry," he added.
"I had undergone operation for the eye cataract and after the operation I lost my vision," said Sreedhar, one of the victims.
Most of the patients were from Kandwal village in Nurpur sub-division of Kangra district, bordering Pathankot.
The  screening camp for the patients of Himachal Pradesh was conducted by Nagni Mandir Committee of Nurpur, about 60 kms from Dharamsala .
