Jalandhar, March 26, 2013: The Central Bureau of Investigation has arrested an Additional Commissioner of Income Tax, Gandhinagar in a bribery case.
It was alleged in the complaint that the Additional Commissioner, Income Tax, Gandhinagar had demanded an illegal gratification of Rs.50 lakh for scrutiny and assessment of the Income Tax Return for the assessment year 2010-2011 filed by a construction firm based in Gandhinagar. The amount of bribe was subsequently reduced to Rs.30 lakh and it was also informed that the assessment order would be handed over immediately on delivery of the bribe amount on March 25, 2013. The complainant, who was one of the partners of the said construction firm, lodged the complaint with CBI. A trap was laid by CBI. The complainant and another partner of the said firm went to meet the Additional Commissioner. The bribe amount was delivered at a courier service located in Ahmedabad as arranged by Additional Commissioner and his acquaintance. After confirmation of the delivery of the bribe amount, the complainant was handed over the Assessment Order.
Searches were conducted at various premises of the accused in Gandhinagar, Ahmedabad, New Delhi and Kolkata. Incriminating documents and articles were recovered during the searches.
The arrested accused is being produced today in the jurisdictional court.
The investigation is continuing.
