Chandigarh, December 5, 2014: Sukhbir Singh Badal, President Shiromani Akali Dal and Deputy Chief Minister Punjab today appealed the Prime Minister Narinder Modi to preserve residence of Babasaheb Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar at 26 Alipur Road1, Delhi as National Memorial under an enactment of the Parliament Act equivalent to The Rajghat Samadhi Act, 1951.
In a letter to Prime Minister, Badal said that he want to bring to the notice of Prime Minister that there was feeling among followers of Babasaheb Dr. Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar, architect of Indian Constitution that their esteem leader is being denied a memorial befitting his status. “As you would know Punjab has the largest population of Dalits in the country and there is a demand from this section that Babasaheb’s residence at 26 Alipur Road1, Delhi should be converted into National Memorial”, he added.
Lashing at Congress party for ignoring this matter of utmost importance for long, Badal said that the Ministry of Welfare (now Social Justice and Empowerment) had decided to acquire the property at 26 Alipur Road1, Delhi for setting up Dr. Ambedkar Memorial in October 1992 but nothing has been done on the ground to give an impression to the crores of followers of Babasaheb that the Centre government is serious about raising the status of building to that of a National memorial.
“Now with the change if guard and formation of the NDA government which has always stood by the cause of Dalit Community I think time has come to give Babasaheb’s residence a status equivalent to the Rajghat Samadhi. As you would be aware that Bapu Mahatma Gandhi’s Samadhi has been given a special status under the Rajghat Samadhi Act, 1951”, said Badal.
Badal further added that the Shiromani Akali Dal joins the people of Punjab as well as the country in demanding a special status for Babasaheb’s residence. He said that Shiromani Akali Dal was going to organize a function at this historic residence tomorrow on the occasion of Pre Nirvan Diwas.
