Nitin Gadkari to visit Srinagar tomorrow for high level review of relief operations

New Delhi, September 21, 2014: The Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways, Rural Development and Drinking Water and Sanitation Nitin Gadkari is visiting Jammu and Kashmir tomorrow for an on the spot review of relief and rehabilitation operations concerning rural roads and drinking water in the flood ravaged areas in the state.

After arrival at Srinagar airport in the morning, Gadkari will undertake aerial survey of severely affected areas in the state. Later he will hold a review meeting to assess the damage caused to the roads built under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) and the plans to rebuild the damaged road network.

The review meeting will be attended, among others, by senior officials from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, Border Roads Organization, Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana and officials from the state government. Gadkari will also review the drinking water supply with the concerned officials.

Before returning to Delhi, Gadkari will hold discussions with the state chief minister Shri Omar Abdullah. He will also call on the governor N. N. Vohra.

The centre has so far supplied more than 4lakh 25 thousand litres of drinking water for the flood affected people of Jammu and Kashmir. Four Water purification plants each with capacity of one lakh litres per day are already working at Rambag, Old Airport Base, Bemina and Rajbagh.

Additional 20 water purification plants each with a capacity of 20,000 litres per day have been airlifted from Hyderabad to Srinagar out of which 12 have already been installed at Baramulla, Sopore, Mahjoornagar, Padshahibagh and four at different hospitals.

The review of relief measures comes in the wake of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s direction to all the Ministries and Departments of the Central government to join in the rescue, relief and rehabilitation measures to help and assist the state government in tiding over the unprecedented natural calamity faced by the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
