New Delhi, September 17, 2014: Relief operations have been stepped up after the visit of the Union health Minister Dr Harsh Vardhan to Jammu on 13th September, 2014 and Srinagar on 14th September, 2014 to review the ongoing relief activities. The Minister met the Governor, Chief Minister, Health Minister, Chief Secretary & Health Secretary. He advised the State Government on Public Health Measures that need to be taken to prevent communicable disease outbreaks. To improve the outreach services, HFM recommended that boats may be mobilised to send medical supplies. He also assured the State Government of requisite assistance including doctors and medicines.
A team of Special DGHS, Additional Secretary and Joint Secretary went to Srinagar on 10th September, 2014 for a first hand assessment of the situation and to facilitate coordination for health related relief.
Ministry of Health & Family Welfare is monitoring the situation arising out of floods in Jammu and Kashmir. A control room has been set up and functioning 24x7 basis in the Ministry (Phone 23061469, 23063205, 23061302)
Two Public Health Teams were positioned on 08th September, 2014, one each in Jammu and Srinagar for Rapid Health Assessment and to prevent/control public health exigencies.
A 29 member clinical team comprising Physicians, Pediatricians and Gynecologists from Central Government hospitals (Dr RML Hospital, Safdarjung Hospital and Lady Hardinge Medical College) were posted to Kashmir on 10th/ 11th September, 2014. They are providing specialized care in the District hospitals of Anantnag, Phulwama, Kulgam, Shopian, Badgam, and Bandipur.
Psycho- social teams for psycho social need assessment have been deployed from National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences (NIMHANS), Bangalore on 12, September, 2014.
A group of 20 specialist doctors from Delhi Medical Association have volunteered to serve the flood affected areas of Jammu & Kashmir. They will be reaching Srinagar tomorrow and will be further deployed in the affected areas.
Chief Secretary (J&K) vide his FAX Message dated 05th September, 2014 requested twenty three medicines. Fourteen medicines have been supplied in full quantity; 6 medicines have been supplied in part and remaining three drugs are being procured to be supplied on urgent basis. As of now, about 76 tonnes of medicines have been airlifted. This includes 10 lakh chlorine tablets for water disinfection, antipyretics for fever, vomiting, anti -diarrheal drugs, antibiotics, pediatric preparations, Intravenous fluids. Today about 33.9 metric ton medical supplies including Chlorine tablets, ORS, IV fluids (R/l), Paracetamol syrup, Antibiotic, Anti-emetic and Anti-spasmodic have reached Palam Technical Area of Air-force for airlifting to Srinagar.
Indian Red Cross Society has so far supplied 1082 tents (each to house eight people) from their stores at Delhi (750) and Arakkonam (332). Seven hundred additional tents are available at Arakkonam, Tamil Nadu for deployment. In addition, they have sent 750 tarpaulins, 1000 kitchen sets and 5000 blankets. 10000 additional blankets have been dispatched on 14.09.2014.
Two large water purification units, each having a capacity of purifying 50,000 litres of water per day, and six small water purification units (14000 litres / day) have been deployed by Indian Red Cross Society (along with trained manpower).
One lakh quantity of Sanitary Napkins (104 cartons) and 50000 packets of ORS (from NDMC) have been sent to Srinagar on 16.09.2014.
One lakh doses of Measles vaccine for Srinagar and fifty thousand doses of Measles vaccine for Jammu sent on 16.09.2014.
25 Metric Tons of Bleaching Powder has been mobilized from Nagda, Madhya Pradesh to Bhopal railway station for dispatching it by Rail to Jammu.
