Kolkata, May 16 (IANS) With fireworks and colours, celebrations erupted across the eastern metropolis with West Bengal's ruling Trinamool Congress sweeping the Lok Sabha polls and decimating the Left to win or on way to winning 34 of the state's 42 seats.
Trinamool's supporters - men, women, old and young alike - took to the streets in city pockets as the trend became clearer in the later part of the day.
Loyalists sported headbands, adorned with the party's colours and flower symbol and daubed each other with green colour powder. The festive atmosphere virtually resembled Holi.
Waving Trinamool flags, enthusiasts also resorted to fireworks at night.
In areas like C.I.T More (north-eastern part of Kolkata) and alleys of south Kolkata, the air was rent with the sounds of firecrackers as they lit up the summer sky.
Whereas for the Bharatiya Janata Party, which emerged as a force to reckon with, with two seats and impressive performance overall, the colour saffron dominated the celebrations.
With Narendra Modi poised to become the next prime minister, party workers rented the air with the 'Har Har Modi' slogan in several places while SMSes with the message 'An Ki Baar Modi Sarkaar' did the rounds among Modi's fans.
