Chennai: Doctors at Fortis Malar Hospital performed futuristic orthopaedic keyhole procedure –All Autologous Cartilage Transplant (AACT) – to treat articular cartilage defects of the knee of a 72-year-old woman recently. This is the first time that this procedure has been performed successfully in Chennai to transplant the cartilage. The team of doctors was led by Dr Nand Kumar Sundaram, Senior Consultant, Trauma & Orthopaedic Surgeon, Fortis Malar Hospital.

The septuagenarian patient was admitted after she had an accidental fall while climbing a staircase. She had complaints of difficulty in walking. After the patient was clinically examined, a condition called Osteochondritis dissecans was diagnosed. It is a condition where the cartilage and underlying bone structure of joints are damaged. This leads to disability in carrying out day to day activities.

An AACT procedure was recommended and later performed successfully to treat articular cartilage lesions. The new technique transplants healthy cartilage tissue through a keyhole along with the use of bioactive material to treat articular cartilage lesions, thereby reducing recovery time. This maiden technique is better than traditional Autologous Chondrocyte Implantation (ACI) with minimum complications and swift recovery to do normal activities. The patient was able to stand on her feet & walk after a day after the successful procedure.

Commenting on the procedure, Dr. Nand Kumar Sundaram said “The advantage of All Autologous Cartilage Transplant (AACT) over other treatments for chondral repair is that they can be applied in a single surgical procedure and it avoids the cumbersome process of cell culture or a separate scaffolding of joints. The entire procedure is autologous, which means there is no usage of chemical agents during the entire treatment therefore making it a completely safe procedure for all patients.TheAll Autologous Cartilage Transplant procedure can be aneffective alternative to standard autologous chondrocyte implantation.”

AACT is a procedure where the surgeon will harvest a small piece of healthy articular cartilage from the patient’s knee, combine with Platelet Rich Plasma and apply it on the lesion site with the helpof an autologous sealant (fibrin). AACT is a safe, single sitting and cost-effective procedure in treating cartilage lesions.

Prem Sagar unveils memoir of his father

Prem Sagar with cast and crew of Ramayan at launch of An Epic of Life- Ramanand Sagar.

“The book is my putra dharma”, says renowned cinematographer Prem Sagar at the launch of his latest book

Mumbai: Chronicling the life of a visionary, the award winning cinematographer and son Prem Sagar unveiled a memoir of his father, “An Epic Life: Ramanand Sagar” at Mumbai city. The grand evening of the launch of the book was graced with the presence of the original star cast of Ramanand Sagar’s record breaking TV series Ramayan- Dipika Topiwala, the Indian actress who rose to fame playing Devi Sita; Arun Govil, best known for playing Lord Rama; Sunil Lahiri, who played the role of Lakshman; ` Sameer Razda, most famous for playing Shatrughna; and most importantly Vindu Dara Singh, S/o Dara Singh as Hanuman. Alongside the star cast, the event also witnessed the editor of the TV series, Subash Sehgal and Cameraman Ajit Naik.

Published by Westland Publications (an Amazon Company), the book gives insights into the incredible life of Ramanand Sagar from his birth in Lahore to his magnificent achievement in Ramayan.

The highbrow launch event witnessed startling discussions on life of his birth in Lahore in 1917, his dramatic escape in 1947 when Pakistani tribesmen attacked the state, his arrival in Bombay and his subsequent glorious career. The conversation also revolved around how Ramanand Sagar escaped administrative hurdles to deliver the Ramayan series. What will history remember Ramanand Sagar as? Prem Sagar’s book may provide same answer.

Feeling nostalgic on the launch of his father’s memoire, Prem Sagar commented, “I cannot express the emotions that came across while penning down the book. This book is a tribute to my father, Padmashri Ramanand Sagar. Throughout my father’s years in journalism and an author of stories, stage plays & films, his role as a producer and director of big blockbusters were all a step towards his final goal of bringing Ramayana to television viewers throughout the world. The book is my putra dharma.”

Gracing the launch event, Vindu Dara Singh stated, “I vividly recall the time my father was approached for the role of Hanuman in Ramanand Sagar’s Ramayan. It was intriguing and as a child one always wonders how the characters of any supernatural orientation manage to fly to the rescue. I experienced the making of Ramayan and witnessed Ramanand Sagar diligently working towards fulfilling his vision. I am not an avid reader but this book takes me back to those nostalgic memories which I still cherish.”

Famously known for playing Lord Rama in Late Ramanand Sagar's Ramayan, Arun Govil expressed his feelings by saying, “I consider it as a privilege to have worked under such a respected and legendary man. We have come quite far from the early days of Ramayan but it is today that I realized the strong connect I share with my other co-stars, the Sagar family and everyone involved in making of Ramayan. This book not only brings back memories from our days of shoot but also finally gives us a chance to get a better understanding of Ramanand Sagar vision back then.”

From a clapper boy in the silent movie "Raiders of the Rail Road" in 1936, Dr. Ramanand Sagar rose to be a successful film maker, writer, director & producer to be reckoned with. He not only mastered the art of cinema, but also entertained the masses in the long run.

The book reveals the sensitive truths-political, personal or miracles of Ramanand Sagar’s life journey and his divine mission of making the legendary TV serial Ramayan.

On 25 January 1987, with the telecast of the very first episode of Ramayan, Indian television changed for all time to come. In a matter of weeks, the series became a national obsession. During the Ramayan slot, roads emptied out. No marriages and political rallies were scheduled for that time. More than three decades later, there has been nothing to match it.

When we moved out of mansion from my father’s place, me and my sister had to sleep without any mattress on the floor. My mother kept me on toes always she shared about her upbringing.

It took me 7 months to reach out to Arunachalam Muruganantham, the social activist from Tamil Nadu who introduced low-cost sanitary pads. Then came my book and then the film ‘Padman’.

Make them read more and diverse books so that their understanding will be more wider. Next best things parents do with their sons is to open a friendly conversation on any subject and including embarrassing subjects too.

My father much early in my life predicted that I would an author one day. My father was a good reader. We found few books which he read, underlined on his bed side at the time of his demise.

When asked to prescribe three good books for women, twinkle said women should read more books. Read as diverse as possible so that they provider prospects of things in life. Those who don’t read books, do lot of disservice to them, she said.

Congenital heart problems can be detected before birth: Dr.Rajat Gupta

Congenital heart problems can be detected

Early Diagnosis Must for Better Results

Jammu: “To achieve the best results in such cases, early diagnosis and timely intervention is a must. These problems can be diagnosed even before the birth of baby and appropriate steps then can be taken. Awareness among the parents, school teachers and health care providers all lead to early detection of congenital heart defects,” said Dr.Rajat Gupta, Pediatric Cardiologist at Fortis Hospital Mohali while addressing media persons here today.
He said heart defects that are present since birth can be treated without surgery too, giving new lease of life to children, adding, Fortis Hospital, Mohali, being the only hospital in the region to offer complete diagnostic, surgical and non-surgical treatment in heart ailments among children, has recently successfully treated two children.
Dr. Gupta was in Jammu today for the Pediatric Cardiology awareness drive. Talking to the media persons he said that one in every hundred babies suffer from congenital heart defects, or heart defects that are present since birth. Close to 1.8 Lakh babies are born with these heart problems every year. But only a small percentage of them get appropriate and timely treatment. The main reasons behind this are lack of awareness and myth that the hole in the heart will heal by itself with time. The delay in seeking treatment complicates matters, the cardiologist added.
Hundreds of babies get a new lease of life at Fortis Hospital Mohali each year due to the combined benefit of world-class clinicians and latest technology.
While sharing details about two girls, one 11 months old and another seven years old whom he has recently treated, Dr Rajat said these defects are rare occurrence with incidence of 8 cases per 1000 live births. But considering the entire population and birth rate in India, total disease burden is enormous. Both of these patients had hole in heart which can lead to low weight gain, pneumonia and heart failure. These girls underwent open heart surgery to close that hole.
While the 11 months girl was treated on time, surgery of older girl was delayed and we had to do the angiography to see whether she is still operable or not but fortunately she was operable and also responded to treatment well.
Heart defects, which are present since birth, could be a simple hole in heart, which can be treated without surgery by catheter intervention or the defects can be complex, requiring open heart surgery. Treatment for these defects in children is limited to handful of hospitals across the country.
These defects of the heart which are present since birth can range from simple lesions to problems of valve, which can be treated without surgery by catheter intervention. The defects can be complex requiring open heart surgery or sometimes even surgery cannot correct the basic defect, in such cases only palliative surgery can be done to relieve the symptoms of patient.
Box: Watch out for these in your children!
• Low weight gain
• Fast breathing, fast heart rate
• Easy fatigue while playing
• Repeated episodes of pneumonia
• Bluish discoloration of fingers, lips

Surgeons eliminate rare and cricket ball sized prostate cancer tumor

On a consequential six-hour-long surgery, Nanavati Super Specialty Hospital doctors remove patient’s prostate

Mumbai: A 47-year-old Mumbai-based Real Estate Contractor never knew his three-decade long Gutkha (Tobacco product) addiction, would result in removal of multiple internal organs and a life-threatening disease. Completely unaware of the severity of the condition, he visited the hospital for not being able to pass urine and was successfully operated for a rare-cancerous tumor at Nanavati Super Speciality Hospital (NSSH) recently.

The patient was diagnosed with Prostate Carcinosarcoma—an extremely rare combination of carcinoma (cancer which arises from epithelial tissue like prostate glands) and sarcoma (cancer which arises from supporting tissue like muscles and fascia). As per the experts, less than 60 such cases have been reported in medical literature worldwide.

In a six-hour-long surgery, team of highly experienced surgeons removed the patient’s prostate, urinary bladder, rectum and dissected the pelvic lymph node in a complete extraction of the tumor which was larger than a cricket ball and weighed about 250 grams.

“It was an exceptionally rare and large tumor. Prior to admission, he had undergone an endoscopic prostate surgery (TURP) for his urine obstruction. However, as problem of urine obstruction continued, his treating physicians decided to perform a prostate biopsy,” said Dr. Vivek Venkat, Uro-Oncology Surgeon, NSSH.

As diagnostic tests revealed an aggressive variant of prostate cancer, he was referred to NSSH. Upon admission, doctors performed an MRI of the prostate and a PET-scan to determine the spread and stage of the disease.

“The MRI showed an extremely large mass, bigger than a cricket ball. The tumour had spread in the entire prostate, infiltrating into the urinary bladder and rectum. Fortunately for him, the PET scan showed no spread anywhere else in the body,” informed Dr Vivek Venkat.

A team of expert oncologists and counsellors explained the family about the absence of any non-invasive or hormonal treatment as a treatment option because of his rare pathology. Considering the age of the patient, doctors suggested a surgical intervention, followed by radiation and chemotherapy if necessary. In all the prior reported cases surgery was considered as the mainstay of their treatment.

“We performed pelvic exenteration, which involved the removal of his urinary bladder, prostate and rectum along with a complete pelvic lymph node dissection. The six-hour long surgery proceeded without complications. Pathological findings of tumour substantiated the diagnosis of extremely rare—carcinosarcoma,” explained Dr Venkat. The patient recovered without any complications and was discharged after ten days.

Discussing the case, Mr. Manpreet Sohal - COO, Nanavati Super Speciality Hospital stressed the prevalence of prostate cancer in men and the direct correlation between tobacco and any type of cancers.

“As per the Indian Medical Research Centre, prostate cancer is among the top three leading causes of cancers in top tier one and two cities of India. Through this case, we wish to highlight the importance of routine urology check-up for all men nearing 45-50 years of age. The case also reinforces the contribution of tobacco and Gutkha to almost all type of cancers and elimination of these preventable causes of cancers should be our top priority,” Said Mr. Sohal

Prostate cancer develops in the prostate—a small walnut-sized gland that produces seminal fluid. Prostate cancer cells may spread to other areas of the body such as bones and lymph nodes. The prostate is the second leading site of cancer among males in large Indian cities like Delhi, Kolkatta, Pune and Thiruvananthapuram and third leading site of cancer in cities like Bangalore and Mumbai as per population-based cancer registries (PBCRs) of India.

For example, India and Ghana are actively engaged in avoidable blindness elimination projects with cooperation from their governments. In 2016 in India, 4,889 vision and 374 retinopathy of prematurity screenings were conducted, 779 eyeglasses were distributed, and 162 pediatric surgeries were performed. In Ghana in 2016, the Avoidable Blindness Elimination Project and the World Sight Day Kids Funfair screened 9,763 people, including 7,453 children, and detected ophthalmologic diseases in more than 1,000 individuals who consequently received treatment, which included 157 surgeries. More than 20,000 children received vision screenings in Ghana schools, eyeglasses and follow-up care were provided when necessary”, Dr. Raju said.
The EFA mission is to eliminate avoidable blindness under the guiding principles of service, teaching, and research. This is accomplished through eye camps and masonry hospitals in developing countries, training of medical personnel to serve the needy, and educating the population at large on preventative eye care and healthy lifestyle choices. Dr. Raju quotes his mentor in London as saying there are 3 solutions for any problem. The first is education, the second is education, and the third is education. With this education, patients are empowered to take charge of their lives and their own health and prevent further deleterious consequences of their poor lifestyle choices, while sharing this knowledge with their friends and families.
When education and preventative measures are insufficient, medical and surgical interventions are performed. With the aim of permanently providing world-class state-of-the art services to populations with poor access to health care, the EFA helped to build 2 hospitals in rural India, namely the Srikiran Eye Institute and the Goutami Eye Institute. The Goutami Institute has a wing dedicated to exclusively to children, and the EFA has future plans to build a service and research eye hospital in India where no child will be denied treatment and children from around the world can come to receive services. Dr. Raju and the EFA are also committed to finding new cures for age-old eye disease in children.
For long we at the Eye Foundation of America studiedchildhood blindness in Punjab and Haryana. We found the two states and the neighboring Himachal have a high incidence of childhood blindness. Th already alarming figures are expected to double by 2015. Obviously, these States need attention with regard to providing facilities and services to prevent blindness among children.
Dr. Raju appealed to the members of Chandigarh Ophthalmological Society to extend a hand of cooperation to the Eye Foundation of America to combat the serious situation of childhood blindness in the region.
Thanking Dr. Gupta and the Chandigarh OphthalmologicalSociety. Dr. Raju said he was overwhelmed by the concern the medical fraternity felt on the issue and appreciated the members for their offer of cooperation in his projects.
Dr, Raju also thanked the veteran journalist Prabhjot Singh, Mr. Vineet Joshi and Mr. Devinder Sharma for making his meeting possible with the ChandīgarhOphthalmological Society and the media.
He said he will be happy to meet with Punjab, Haryana and Himachal State government officials to work with them on the project.
Earlier in the day he met with themedia at local JM Marriott and spoke extensively about his projects and work. He took questions and repeatedly appealed to media persons to highlight the tragedy of childhood blindnesswhich leaves individuals dependent on others for life. He was appreciative of the vibrant Chandigarh press.

Cold makes arteries constrict that can decrease blood flow and delivery of oxygen

Panchkula: “Every 1 degree Celsius drop in temperature that is 1.8 degree Fahrenheit comes with a 0.4% increase in deaths from all causes. Cold makes arteries constrict that can decrease blood flow and delivery of oxygen.”
Dr Virendar Sarwal, director of cardiothoracic & vascular at Ojas Hospital stated this while addressing around 60 members of senior citizen club during a talk on ‘how to take care of heart during extreme winter’ at Ojas on Saturday.
Among others Subash Kapoor, president of senior citizen club was also presented during occasion.
Dr Sarwal said that cold tends to increase the formation of blood clots. Winters also is flu season, and studies have shown an increase in heart attack shortly after people get the flu, he remarked.
Winter months also bring holidays that can stress people out, and the festivities can cause them to overindulge, asserted Dr Srawal.
Another seasonal factor is the lack of sunshine, which might dissuade people from exercising, he maintained.
When it’s dark people tend to be more depressed. We know that there’s correlation between emotional upset, depression and cardiac disease, he said.
The various preventive aspects of heart disease were also discussed during occasion especially for their siblings as to how to know whether they are prone to heart disease or not by knowing their BP and genetic profile if one of their parents and grandparents have been suffering from heart problems.
Dr Sarwal spoke about importance of having relaxed and stress free life through yoga, and regular diet at proper time.
He also stressed upon the art of sharing and loving and expressing between friends as it release good hormones in the body which protects the heart.

Shun junk food, walk daily to have healthy kidneys: Dr Sunil Kumar

Kaithal: Consumption of junk food and little or no exercises are is the prime cause of increasing chronic kidney diseases in population as young as 30 to 50 years. To put a control on it, all of us should stop eating junk food, canned or tinned food, frozen food, not consume cold drinks and instead take as much as water and do regular exercise.
Dr Sunil Kumar, Senior Consultant and Kidney Transplant Surgeon from Fortis Hospital, Mohali said while interacting with media persons at Kaithal. He was talking about the kidney diseases and the need of awareness for keeping kidneys healthy.
Dr Sunil Kumar, who has been trained in kidney transplant at PGI Chandigarh and Oxford, England, said that he has been performing kidney transplants for tha past 11 years.
With an experience of more than 1000 kidney transplants Dr Sunil Kumar has also done research work on various reasons for developing kidney disease. He said that prevalence of kidney diseases like stones, infection, chronic kidney disease (CKD), drugs related kidney injury, cancer etc have increased manifolds in the last few decades. Also the fact is that younger individuals between 30-50 years are now more often reporting to doctors with underlying kidney diseases.
Currently it is the seventh common cause of death in India and its prevalence has increased by nearly 30% in last 15 years. This is mainly due to lifestyle diseases such as diabetes and high blood pressure. Apart from change of lifestyle certain foods/ habits also contribute to development of kidney diseases. These are believed to be consuming too much salt, pain medications / self medications, too much sweet, less of water, high protein diet, meat in excess (red meat), processed foods, alcohol, smoking, lack of sleep, lack of exercise, chronic sitting and holding pee for too long.
He added that self medications for long time have adverse effect on kidneys and it should be avoided.
Since chronic kidney diseases are rising health problem in India and worldwide, Dr Sunil also told about CKD, its diagnosis and treatment. He added that CKD affects nearly 10% of world population and is associated with approx 735,000 deaths annually.
Every year 1 lakh new CKD patients are detected and at any given time nearly 130000 patients are receiving hemodialysis. The matter of concern is that number of patients on dialysis is increasing by 10-15% every year. Over 50 % of the CKD patients are first seen in Stage 5.
Out of them 90% patients die without receiving any transplant or dialysis. Only 10% patients receive this hell2 out of which 60% stop for financial reasons. Out of these 10% nearly less than one third receive kidney transplant. In India nearly 3500 kidney transplants done annually but this number is too less to meet the requirement.
Unfortunately CKD usually does not cause any symptom in early stages and hence it is difficult to diagnose it early. However, with spreading awareness in general public about kidney health it might be possible to pick this problem early and appropriate treatment can be started. So any individual who complains of tiredness, decreased appetite, swelling over body, difficulty in concentration, disturbance in sleep, high blood pressure, frothing in urine, excessive body itching, tendency to vomit, difficulty in breathing should contact a kidney disease medical expert to rule out CKD. If diagnosed with CKD the patients may require hemodialysis or kidney transplant.
As compared to dialysis the results of kidney transplant are definitely better. “The life of a person undergoes a sea-change once he or she undergoes kidney transplant. Imagine the relief for somebody, who was going to hospital for dialysis three times a week and then leading a dialysis free normal life after getting a successful kidney transplant.” said Dr Sunil Kumar.
According to Dr. Sunil, “If carefully selected for transplant, the patients usually do well and can go home within one week of surgery. Of course the patient has to take some medications lifelong and has to follow with a transplant surgeon or nephrologist after the surgery. Except for the first three months there are very few dietary restrictions”.

60pc of childhood hearing loss is due to preventable causes: Dr Sanjay Khanna

Panchkula: To Create awareness on Hearing loss in Children and Cochlear Implant Surgery a team of Doctors from Paras Super specialty Hospital Panchkula, addressed the media person today. Present on the occasion were Dr Sanjay Khanna, Senior Consultant & Head , Department of ENT & Dr Lokesh Mittal Associate Consultant from Paras Specialty Hospital, Panchkula.
Addressing the media person Dr Sanjay Khanna said “About 226 million Indian are suffering from Disabling Hear Loss and only 15000 Cochlear Implant have been done in India till date.” Deafness or hearing loss means when a person is unable to hear. Disabling Hearing loss refers to hearing loss greater than 40 Decibels. According to W.H.O around 466 million people worldwide have disabling hear loss, out of which 266 million are Indian and 34 million are children. 60% of childhood hearing loss is due to preventable causes. Hearing loss may result from genetic causes, birth complications, ear infections, few drugs, noise exposure and ageing. It has been estimated that by 2050 over 900 million people or one in every ten people will have disabling hearing loss; however, India has already reached this scenario. The majority of people with disabling hearing loss live in low- and middle-income countries. Approximately one third of people over 65 years of age are affected by disabling hearing loss and the prevalence in this age is greatest in South Asia, Asia Pacific and Africa.
W.H.O refers the “hard of hearing’ to those people who have hearing loss ranging from mild to severe. These people can get benefit from hearing aids, Cochlear Implants and other assistive devices. However, those patients including children and adult who are having significant or profound hearing losses can be only benefitted from Cochlear Implant surgery.
Speaking on this occasion Dr Sanjay Khanna who has performed the 1st Cochlear Implant Surgery of Panchkula in a 4-year-old child at Paras Hospital, Panchkula. He said that Cochlear Implant is a Gold Standard surgery for children who are profoundly Deaf (Hearing loss more than 90 Decibel). The earliest this device is implanted, the sooner a child can hear and speak’. Dr Sanjay Khanna has wide exposure and expertise in Cochlear Implant Surgery and Sleep Apnea Surgery.
He further enlightened that in a surgical procedure of 3-4 hours implant is placed inside the inner ear of the patient. After this implantation a child has to undergo speech therapy session for at least two years. With the help of this procedure deaf and dumb children can learn to hear and speak . To diagnose if a child can hear or not, early hearing screening of new born is necessary. OAE, which is a basic hearing screening test, is performed to check whether a child can hear or not in future or the child is hearing impaired. This test can be done after second day of the birth. In more advance countries like US, Europe and Australia more implants are being done in adult population as elderly patients are unable to understand speech despite the best quality hearing aids.
Dr. Sanjay Khanna gave an insight on this device and “Cochlear Implant is an electronic device that provides sound signals from damaged or non functioning part of inner ear to the brain. Cochlear implant has two parts, the first part is surgically implanted into the bone surrounding the ear which consists of a receiver stimulator that decodes and sends an electrical signal to the brain. The second part is an outside device which is made up of a microphone or receiver, speech processor, and an antenna. This part receives the sound, converts it into an electrical signal and sends it to the inside part of the cochlear implant’’
Dr. Sanjay Khanna said in Haryana more than 115,000 people have some form of hearing loss and this number is increasing. To check the increase in number of children going undetected and subsequently crossing the appropriate age for treatment, a Universal Newborn Hearing Screening (UNHS) program is urgently needed in Haryana. Paras hospital, Panchkula has all facilities for early diagnosis, intervention and habilitation for children identified with various forms of hearing loss.
Mr. Ashish Chadha, Facility Director, Paras Hospital, Panchkula said that In India, four in every 1000 children suffer from severe to profound hearing loss, with over 100,000 babies born with hearing deficiency every year. The estimated prevalence of adult-onset deafness in India is 7.6% and childhood onset deafness 2%, according to Union Health Ministry. Hearing disability is the second most common cause of disability in India.

Talk on Gullain-Barré

Dr.Sushil K.Rahi.

Dr.Sushil K.Rahi, neurologist gives an informative talk

Chandigarh: Gullain-Barré syndrome (GBS) is an autoimmune disorder characterized by flaccid paralysis. It usually is preceded by respiratory or gastrointestinal infections most commonly by Campylobacter jejuni, human herpes virus, Ebstein-Barr virus, or cytomegalovirus. It can also be triggered by pregnancy, surgery or even vaccination.”
Dr.Sushil K.Rahi, neurologist stated this while addressing an informative talk on Gullain-Barré syndrome at Ivy Hospital, Mohali today.
He said that the major clinical feature of GBS is an evolving are flexic motor paralysis with or without sensory disturbance. The paralysis is of an ascending type, involving legs first followed by arms, facial muscles, and in severe cases causing respiratory muscle weakness requiring mechanical ventilation. Weakness progresses over weeks reaching a plateau after 4-week.”
The exact mechanism of GBS after surgery is not known. It may be as a result of a generalized inflammatory response to the surgical stress, maintained Dr Rahi.
GBS occurring after surgery is a rare phenomenon with an unknown etiology. The risk for GBS after surgery is 4.1% cases per 1,00,000 operations. The very few cases have been reported in the literature after an off-pump coronary artery bypass graft (CABG), he remarked.
Dr Rahi further informed that early administration of intravenous immunoglobulin is considered as an alternative therapy for shortening the period and severity of paresis. The role of corticosteroids is controversial.
GBS in the postoperative period increases intensive care unit and hospital stay and results in increased morbidity. Though it is very rare after CABG, it should be kept in mind in patients with predisposing conditions such as malignancy or autoimmune disorders who develop limb weakness within 8 weeks after surgery, he asserted.

CMA organises unique

A single-session holistic solution to transform oneself

Chandigarh: The last week of the year brought a treasure of happiness for the members of Chandigarh Management Association (CMA), as they participated in unique Masterclass on Stress Management that proved to be a holistic solution and virtually transformed them. Members thanked the CMA for organising the workshop that gave them a new perspective and taught a new way of life.

All the programs organized by the CMA are of very high order as they invite speakers of natonal repute who share their knowledge and experience with the members. CMA members participate in an online survey ahead of the program to set the expectations and then they share their feedback on the quality of the program, its relevance, usefulness, and the skill of the speaker. This ensures that the standard of the programs undertaken remains high.

P. K. Khurana, the well-known public relations consultant, was the keynote speaker, who has always been there in the list of India’s top 100 influential game changers in the domain of public relations. He is now engaged in spreading happiness through his workshops. The main feature of today’s workshop was that it addressed not only as to how to manage stress, but also went deeper and shared tools to manage one’s guilt and anger as well. The holistic workshops is a real spiritual experience well beyond the realms of medical science.

Manjeev Kumar Vohra, President, CMA, said, "We have been planning to conduct such a workshop for our members for a long time and it so happened that a premier medical journal, namely, Lancet Psychiatry, carried a report at the start of this week on the mental health. It has been found that 1 out of every 7 Indians is suffering from mental illness. It inspired us to organize the workshop immediately. We are happy that CMA members have enjoyed and appreciated it thoroughly.”

PK Khurana, Founder and Chief Mentor, FLY Unlimited Worldwide, who terms himself to be a rag-picker of the soul, said, “All the CMA members happen to be achievers. They are the ones who have ‘arrived’. They lead their companies, manage teams, solve problems and are required to take decisions immediately. This some times creates pressures and causes stress. If not addressed, the stress may force one even to take extreme steps. There is a big difference between being successful and being happy. The goal of my life is to spread happiness and to remove the mental garbage from people’s souls. I thank the CMA for giving me this opportunity to take my life’s purpose forward.”
